Multilayered Examinations of Nature, the Cosmos, & Geology
A Life Obsessed with Art
Skally has been fascinated by art since he could first hold a crayon and blend colors. Quickly graduating to oil pastels, he had an early appreciation for impressionistic landscapes by the masters like Monet, Manet, Pissarro, and Renoir. That love of blending colors and exploring color combinations grew to a new found love of texture and depth. Following the natural progression from Monet to Van Gogh, Skally began to experiment with impasto paint applications and exaggerated realities. Deep diving into the expressionism of Kandinsky, and the abstract-expressionsim of Pollack, he began to experiment heavily with liquid mediums to enhance texture and depth. That wet-in-wet style with a variety of liquid mediums is now used across all subjects, from florals and seascapes, to non-figurative works.
Gallery Testimonials & Show Reviews
“For acrylic painter Nicholas Skally, art isn't about recreating an image that already exists. It's about adding layer upon layer of colors to create something unique and new. His canvases are covered with thick slabs of paint, overlapping and dripping into swirls and bursts of blue, red, pink, gold and green, emulating abstract designs that can look like a flower, the sea or nothing but a carefully sculpted barrage of color.”
— Lacey Korevec , Staff Writer, Cranbury Press
“The Gourgaud Gallery is very pleased to exhibit the works of artist Nick Skally. His work brings a unique and exciting approach to abstract painting with layers of color in combination with tremendous texture.”
— Amy Amico, Gourgaud Gallery Chairperson
“The art engages the viewer on multiple levels because of the depth and complexity in each piece." “The plethora of textures he assembles attracts the eye, and the combination of colors sooth the mind”
— James McManaman, Owner, Absolute Abstract
The Process
Skally incorporates water, clear medium, paint, fluid acrylics, and ink, using a palette knife to enhance and affect lines, forms, and texture. The organic nature of this process establishes paths of motion that he then manipulates to give the paintings life and create the images seen within. His movements during the process can be frenetic and spontaneous at times and slow and deliberate at others. Each painting is developed layer by layer, over several weeks. The result is streams of carefully chosen color combinations with dynamic fluidity and rich textures. Meaning is left to the viewer. He lets the narrative reside in one’s own interpretations.
Skally is a member of the New Hampshire Art association, along with 250 juried members of painters, photographers, printmakers, sculptors, and other fine artists living and working primarily in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, and Vermont. His work has been featured in galleries in Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. You can find his work currently hanging in the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery in downtown Portsmouth, NH.
